'You need to make a choice': Feline-loving husband is forced to choose between his wife and cats as their long-distance relationship comes to an end and her allergies put their future on paws

If you had to, would you be able to choose between your life partner and your beloved pets?

Cat hair might be the one singular downside to having cats. Well, that and the fact that they basically boss you around all the time, but the pet hair is much harder to live with. It's everywhere. It's in your bed, on your clothes, and sometimes even dangerously close to your food. We've learned to live with it, just like dog people have learned to live with taking their pups out for a midnight stroll if duty calls. For us, it's just normal, but for a person with feline allergies, it can be a nightmare.

We spoke a lot about cat hair above, but surprisingly enough, most people aren't allergic to the hair itself - they're allergic to the dander (or their saliva, sweat, etc) - the hair is just a vehicle for transporting that sensitive material into the air, your furniture, and then into their noses. But because cats shed so much fur daily, it makes your house a sneeze-fest just waiting to happen. No amount of vacuuming or air purifiers can save them.

This all leads us back to our couple whose marriage might be ending before it really even has the chance to get started. They've been long-distance their entire relationship and are about to finally move in together. The only problem is: she's allergic to his cats. Will he have to give up his fur babies to live with the love of his life? Will she be doomed to living in a house where all she does is sneeze and clean up cat hair? It's less than ideal, but the good news is that the cat community is here to help them work through their marital mayhem and help them live their happily ever after, all four of them.

  • I had a cousin who was allergic to cat hair. Not just a few sneezes kind of allergic, like if he didn't take a super strong allergy pill, his eyes would tear up so much he wouldn't be able to see and he would have sneezing attacks that would last for minutes on end. Allergies to pet dander are no joke. Sure, a lot of people use a mild form of it as an excuse to distance themselves from pets, but for others, it's a real issue. This could very well make or break their marriage before they even got the chance to live together!

    Warrior536 Depends how allergic she is. Some cat allergies can be treated with meds, but done are severe enough you would be putting her in danger by keeping the cats.

    You could look into getting a family member or friend to adopt the cats so you can visit them sometime. But the decision is yours and your wife, not mine or any internet stranger's to take.

    Dizzy_Quiet You need to make a choice. Because long term - her health can't handle the cats. It's not fair to ask her to deal with the allergies and it's not fair to ask you to get rid of the cats. I dealt with this with a boyfriend - and after a long, long situation with lots of discussion and frustration - he chose the cat.

    I was so unhappy and miserable with the cat - I should have just called it sooner. I tried, I really did. And I loved him so much - but I was no match for that cat! It's all good - but I don't date anyone with cats going forward.

  • It really does depend on how allergic she is, but in the end, a choice must be made. And in our expurrience, you almost never get to choose the easy one. Life just ain't that simple for folks like us.

    Sunny_Hill_1 Well, first, why did you get a cat if your wife is allergic to cats? Second, do you have a trusted friend/family member in the vicinity that can adopt a cat? That way, you'll still have visitation rights, lol.

    brock_lee Same thing happened with my sister-in-law and her husband, and they just basically relegated the cats to the basement. It was not some dank hole, the basement was mostly finished. So, she got to keep her cats, and he mostly wasn't suffering.

    fakeworldwonderland Purina has cat food that reduces allergens produced by the cat. But seriously, just get meds if it's that bad. My wife and I are allergic and she's been on meds for years cos her family has several cats.

    build a suuuuper nice outdoor "catio" so they can spend less time indoors paired with a metric f ton of air purifiers for the house to keeps things more allergy friendly.
